Perhaps it’s because virtually everyone in the UK has visited the capital at some point when they were children, but it often seems that it’s easy to overlook London as a city break destination.
But it’s one of the top three visited cities on the planet for a reason. This is a city that can go head-to-head with all the world’s great cities on various fronts and often come out on top. It’s easy to get around, it has an increasingly amazing food scene, and it’s jam-packed with history. It’s also not quite as expensive as it first appears, or at least doesn’t have to be.
Planning a city break, but not sure if London is the right destination? We’ve put together a list of four reasons why it might not just be the right option, but the perfect one.

London is a big, big city, and that can seem a little overwhelming. It’s easy to be slightly less enthused about taking a trip when you can see that all points of interest are located far from each other.
It’s fun to explore London on foot, but you won’t spend your time in the city traipsing around. The tube is fast and well-connected, while the city’s red buses are inexpensive and can be a genuinely fun experience. You’ll cover a lot of ground in London, but it won’t necessarily feel like it.
Did you know that London consistently ranks as one of the world’s best food destinations? What’s incredible about the city’s food scene is that it caters to pretty much all tastes. You can make a reservation at Polpo, a top-class Italian restaurant Chelsea residents and visitors love, pay a visit to one of London’s great food markets, or sample cuisine from around the world, including Mexico, Japan, India, and Ethiopia. Love fine dining? The city is home to some 85 Michelin-starred restaurants.
Wherever you’re staying, you can be reasonably confident that there’ll be a fun event taking place near your accommodation, every single day, all year round. There’s always a treasure trove of concerts, small art events, and other goings on, and what’s more, many of them are highly affordable. It’s not uncommon to walk into a pub and find that there’s a free concert taking place in the back — and given that this is London, where some of the world’s best musicians live, you can be sure that it’ll be great.
London can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be, and that’s especially true when it comes to planning your events. The city is home to more world-class and free museums and art galleries than anywhere on the planet. The British Museum, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Tate Modern, National Gallery, and many more institutions are some of the most famous in the world, and you can visit all of them without spending a penny (though donations are welcome!).
