When you first discover that you’re expecting as a single woman, it can feel like the rug is pulled from under you. Emotions can run high, and your brain chemistry might take a while to calm down. It’s easy to, in that moment, not know what decisions to make, or lean towards making decisions that you might regret. While it’s your choice, you want to make sure that you make the choice that you believe in. Here are some tips to make sure that you’re able to keep a cool head, relatively speaking, and to make the decision that feels right to you.

The fear and urgency triggered by such big news can make it feel like you have to decide immediately, but you absolutely do not. Take the time to fully consider your options. This can include adoption, as well as termination, in some places, but if your mind immediately goes to either of those, you should also take the time to fully consider motherhood. Thinking through those options, emotionally preparing, and seeking accurate, unbiased information from medical professionals can help you make choices without assumptions or panic.
Unexpected pregnancy can induce a flood of emotions, including fear, confusion, sad, joy, anger, or even numbness. It can also stir up some thoughts that might not normally cross your mind, which can affect your self-image if you don’t simply accept them as a natural reaction to what is an emotionally turbulent time. Processing those emotions through meditation, prayer, writing them down, or even talking with a trusted confidante can help you work through them, getting a little perspective.
If you’re a single woman, and your family or community support is limited, you can feel terribly alone. However, the community might be out there, waiting for you to reach it. You can find an unplanned pregnancy support group that can help address your fears, provide advice, and help reduce the isolation that might cause you to make decisions that you otherwise wouldn’t. But be mindful that the decision is yours, so you should seek encouragement and perspective, but not a definite answer.
Finding others to talk to can help you address many of the uncertainties and the emotional turmoil that comes with such life-changing news. However, at the end of the day, if you make a decision unduly influenced by others, you can come to regret it. Setting boundaries with other people can help you protect your well-being and give you space to make the decision you want. It’s okay to say “no” to advice or to get a little distance from people who are increasing your stress rather than helping with it. You’re very likely to get unsolicited advice, so having a plan to stop it can help.
At the end of the day, it’s no one else’s choice to make. With the tips above, hopefully you can find the right path ahead for you, as an individual or as a mother.
