Cake Smash celebrations for Baby K

Baby K turned one this month!! I still can’t believe he is one and how fast the past year has gone.  But as its such a special birthday, we had such great celebrations.  One of the celebrations we chose to do was the ever so famous cake smash shoot.  I never had the chance to do it with the other two (to be honest, I’d never heard of it when B turned one nearly 7 years ago!)  As my amazing cousin is a whizz with photography, we decided to give the shoot a try!

What is a Cake Smash?

For any of you that don’t know, a cake smash is a photo shoot for a child’s first birthday.  It involves a cake…and a one year old!  You can work out the rest! Lets just say, the child is free to do as they please and will no doubt get extremely messy.  It’s a fun way to celebrate as well as capture such special memories!  I was really excited to do this and I knew it would be right up Baby K’s street.  What more can a one year old want that a big huge chocolate cake put in front of him!  To say he was pleased was an understatement!

The Shoot

At first, he wasn’t sure what to do.  He seemed a little confused and at first didn’t touch the cake.  So with a little bit of encouragement, he soon got stuck in and there was no stopping him!  He surprisingly didn’t get as messy as I thought!  Considering it was chocolate, I was thinking he would be covered from head to toe!  He was actually quite delicate with the cake – I was expecting him to be knocking it over and throwing it everywhere!  Maybe this is a sign of good things to come – a tidy child!

Eating cake!

My cousin had some lovely props for the shoot including a gold ‘Happy Birthday’ banner with pompoms, blue balloons, a rocking horse and a wicker basket.  She also used a wooden floorboard underlay which looked fab!  It also made clearing up the cake off the floor a little easier.  I think Baby K was a natural in front of the lens.  It seemed pretty easy to get some great shots of him and he didn’t really crawl off when the cake was in front of him – I can assure you he was quite happy!

We had such fun and I am so happy I got to experience doing a cake smash shoot.  I love holding on to memories – it can be so easy to forget, but having these memories captured allows us to never to let go.  Especially as Baby K is my last baby!

A huge thank you to MKRea Photography for giving me these special memories and for letting Baby K have so much fun!  If you want to check out Megan’s website site, click here.  She is also over on instagram.
