Have you ever thought about making your own dolls house? It might be an idea you’ve thought about for some time, especially when considering cost and authenticity of doll’s houses. More often than not, plastic monstrosities line the shelves of toy shops and online stores, and any traditional wooden dolls houses get lost in the mix. You may then be steering towards the idea of making your own dolls house.
So, what actually will you need when making a wooden dolls house?
With it being wooden, your going to need wood. A glue gun and measuring tape will also be needed. Prior to cutting up any pieces, you may want to think about what design of dolls house your going to go for, for example, sizing, as well as if your house is going to be single, double or triple storey. You will also need to think about the depth of your dolls house. I’d recommend to draw up your design to scale with dimensions and measurements to work from. There are various scales you can use. A quick google will tell you which one is best for your creation. Having a think about what items and doll’s are going to fit is it also important to consider that this time. You do not want to not be able to fit dolls or furniture into your doll’s house!
When unsure, google it! I always turn to a Youtube tutorial when beginning something for the first time. This will make building your creation a lot easier. As well as this, the one thing to think about is accessibility. I would recommend having a completely open plan front of the house for ease. Having any fiddly doors or cut in walls to certain rooms will only hinder the opportunity to make use of ALL of your dolls house.
Now here’s the fun part! Getting creative and designing the interior of your dolls house! Did you even know dolls house wallpaper even existed?! Get super creative and go wild with your designs of different interior ideas and completely transform your dolls house.
Once you’ve completed the interior of your dolls house, now it’s time to fill it! But what will?! Go through each room of your dolls house and make a list of what items you’d like to include. Theres something really nostalgic about miniature furniture isn’t there!? Make sure you leave enough floor space for the dolls to ‘walk around!’ Another idea I love is adding fairy lights to the interior and exterior of the dolls house to add a warming effect. And of course, giving the opportunity of playing with the dolls house whilst in the dark!
By now, your doll’s house will be complete and even though it’s finished, I think there is always opportunity to extend and work on your project! Have fun and enjoy!
