Bodega Cantina – Family Dining Review

Bodega Cantina in Sutton Coldfield opened its doors in March 2018.  If you love South American food, a great atmosphere and a fun vibe, then this place is definitely one to consider, even with the kids!

Dining out with the children is by no means an easy feat.  It sometimes can be more stressful than its worth!  But it can help if you chose the right restaurant with the right facilities that cater for your little ones.  There has been times when I’ve walked out of a restaurant feeling exhausted, deflated and out of pocket due to not having the best experience.

However, we do eat out regularly as a family and I find that the children adapt to new environments quite quickly and now know the score when it comes to behaving!!  I find some child friendly chain restaurants a little boring and offer the same style of food for both children and adults.  Therefore, I am always on the look out for new places to try with a difference and this is even better if they also cater for our children too! Last month we visited the newly opened Boston Tea Party in Solihull which is also on the top of my list!

I am a big fan of Bodega.  Having visited the Birmingham branch several times and attending the opening night at Sutton, I couldn’t wait to try it with my whole family and check out what was on offer for the children.  This is now the fifth restaurant to join the Bodega family with other locations in Derby, Leicester, Worcester and of course Birmingham.  So I knew we had a treat in store for us!

We arrived at around 3.45pm on a Sunday.  It was moderately busy but still a spacious enough restaurant to house the kids!  We chose a table at the back with benches and enough space for a high chair.  Straight away the children were brought colouring and pencils along with our menus.  My four year old daughter W said ‘Its like the Coco film in here!’  And she is right!  With the bright south American decor with hints of a skull and wrestling theme, this pleased my kids to no end!

What did we eat at Bodega?

We all decided what we wanted and drinks orders were taking quickly.  The children’s deal includes a drink, a veggie pot, main meal and ice cream or fruit all for £5.95.  I thought this was fantastic value!  The kids wolfed down their veggie sticks (hurray!) and not long after we ordered, our starters arrived along with the children’s main dishes.  Bodega offer the kids a choice of four main meals from the Nino menu.

  1. Crispy flour tortillas filled with a choice of: Cheddar and Mozzarella cheese, Cheddar and tomato or roasted chicken and cheese.
  2. Pizzadilla – an open quesadilla with fresh homemade tomato sauce, cheddar cheese and mozzarella with added toppings
  3. Breaded chicken goujons with homemade dips
  4. Meatballs in a homemade tomato sauce

With each main they got to choose either rice or sweet potato fries.  We chose one pizzadilla, one chicken goujons and one meatballs with a mix of rice and sweet potato.  I love how the menu offers the children food with a difference!

Us grown ups chose beef chilli nachos and mole chicken quesadillas to start which were super tasty!  I have to say, Bodega serve the tastiest nachos I’ve ever had!  We then chose our mains.  Matt chose Xim Xim, a Brazilian style dish with chicken and prawns in a peanut coconut sauce with rice. I had Lomo Saltado, a Peruviun classic dish consisting of beef, potatoes and diced veg in a sweet and tangy sauce with rice.  All was delicious!

Whilst we ate mains, the kids tucked into their ice creams and chocolate sauce!  They were very impressed and wanted more!

Our verdict

We all absolutely loved it here at Bodega Sutton.  Its spacious enough to cater for families and has a great theme with colourful decor and a vibrant environment.  I couldn’t fault the staff.  They were extremely attentive and nothing was too much trouble.  They offered my little one some wrestlers to play with and extra colouring after he chucked it on the floor for the umpteenth time!  We honestly received top service!

The food was also fantastic and the children really enjoyed their meals.  As they all shared from the three dishes we ordered, they got to try it all.  The one thing they did say was that the sauce with the meatballs was a little spicy so this dish was preferred by my 8 year old son more.  What’s even more impressive is that KIDS EAT FREE this half term!!  So that’s a saving of £5.95 per child!  So if you are local to a Bodega, why not try somewhere different and still feel reassured that your little ones are catered for!  I’ll definitely be returning soon!

Looks great here! I’m always on the look out for food places to eat with H, like you say it can be at times more stress than it’s worth! The fact that kids at free over half term is a winner though!
