Budget-friendly family home improvements

*This is a collaborative post*

With the high cost of materials and labour, making home improvements is not as simple as it used to be. You might need to be extra budget-savvy and build a bigger savings pot before starting work. Or you might want to consider building up your credit history so you can access better loan deals.

But if you are looking to enhance your home on a budget, with a little planning, there are a few areas you can tackle without breaking the bank.

Add a fresh coat of paint

Perhaps the simplest of home improvement tasks, a fresh lick of paint can transform the look and feel of your interior. Brighten up skirting boards and other woodwork or create a statement wall with a vivid, bold colour. Alternatively, paint the exterior of your house to transform the overall appearance.

Upgrade your cabinets

Replacing kitchen cabinets can be expensive but, to keep costs down, you could sell or upcycle your old ones. If you’d prefer to keep the work to a minimum, you could simply replace your cabinet doors instead of the whole unit.

An even cheaper option is to paint the doors for a fresh look. Choose a completely different colour for a striking change and see how it transforms your space.

The right lighting can make a world of difference and create the ideal atmosphere. Choose to install a variety of lighting options such as LED strip lights, colour changing lamps or subtle wall lamps. Childrens bedrooms might benefit from dimmer lights so you can alter the mood depending on the time of day and help them to get a good nights’ sleep.

It’s also a good opportunity to get creative by adding magical fairy lights or under-cabinet lighting.

Create a snug

A cosy chillout corner makes an ideal space for all the family and it’s easy to create. Depending on your space you could use a whole room or just a section of a living room, kitchen or dining area.

Add instant calm with soft cushions, bean bags and textured throws. If you have the budget, choose a stylish tub chair in a vibrant shade and make it the focal point of your snug. You could use your corner as a reading space and add a bookshelf with a selection of your favourite novels.

Regrout the bathroom

Replace mouldy and tired grout for an instant uplift. If you’re wanting a bigger bathroom transformation without the need to install brand new units, try switching your fixtures and fittings. Gold taps and shower fittings can add an instant touch of luxury.

If there’s more than one home improvement project that appeals to you, it might be a good idea to tackle one at a time so you can save up in between and create an interior look that works for you and your family.

Finally, if your home needs more significant renovation, such as electrical work, it’s wise to consult a professional.
