Can I find out who owns a number plate?

The idea of a number plate is that it is a way to identify a car. Number plates are completely unique and one of a kind; which means that when you see a number plate, you know that it is owned by one particular person. 

This becomes all the more obvious when you think about private number plates. Whereby you choose exactly what the number plate will say (within reason of course). 

Chances are, if you are looking for a private number plate for your car; then there are going to be other people out there looking for the same thing, or a similar thing. The answer is no. Sure, a number plate is going to be an identifier for a particular car and in turn a particular person who owns that car. But, this is not information that you, as an individual can find out. 

It is only the DVLA and the police who are going to be able to find out who owns a car simply with the number plate information. Due to the Data Protection Act, neither of these bodies will actually release the information and divulge the details of who owns a number plate, and it makes sense that this type of information is not freely available or open to the public to learn. 

This information will remain private, regardless of the type of request. It doesn’t matter whether you are looking because you want to own the number plate for yourself; or if you are looking for the owner of the car because it has been involved in an accident. 

So, what can you do?

Really have your heart set on the idea of owning a particular number plate? Not sure on how to find out where it is? The truth is that you might be better off looking for a number plate which is similar rather than exactly the same.
