Choosing the Perfect Diamond Ring

*This is a collaborative post*

Nothing shows your appreciation for a loved one quite like diamonds. The classic symbol of glamour and style, a diamond ring is a timeless accessory that matches every outfit and every occasion. However, the wide range of cuts, settings and carats can sometimes make choosing the right ring for you more complicated than it needs to be.

Whether you’re looking for the perfect anniversary gift or a treat for yourself, this guide is designed to make the decision as easy as possible. From shopping tips to selecting the right ring style, you’ll find everything you need to make an informed choice.

Choosing the perfect diamond ring

Understanding the 4Cs

A good guideline to help you find the diamond ring you’ll fall in love with is the 4Cs grading system. This stands for the colour, clarity, carat weight and cut of a diamond and these things will determine the quality and price of your ring.

Colour – As you would expect, this refers to the colour of a diamond. The spectrum ranges from colourless to light yellow and is determined using a D-Z scale.

Clarity – This involves the number of natural imperfections in a diamond and whether you can see them by eye. Diamonds are rated from Flawless to Included.

Cut – This has less to do with a diamond’s shape and size but more about how it is faceted, proportioned and polished.

Carat – Arguably one of the most determining factors of price, carat is the actual weight of a diamond. The larger the carat, the more you could pay.

Diamond Cuts

A diamond’s cut relates to its symmetry, proportions and how it interacts with light. Not to be mistaken with the shape, the cutting technique used on a rough diamond will determine what it looks like.

There are many cuts to choose from and each has its own unique characteristics. Round brilliant cut diamonds are amongst the most popular and fully optimise brilliance and light return. Emerald cuts greatly emphasis the colour and clarity of a diamond. Princess-cut solitaire diamonds are also cut using the brilliant-cut technique but offer a more glamourous, contemporary feel.

Ring Settings and Styles

The setting is key to enhancing the sparkle of a diamond but the right ring for you will depend on your personal style and daily habits. From classic, vintage and modern ring styles to prong, bezel and channel settings, these details are crucial to holding your diamond in place and influencing its appearance.

Prong settings are designed for single-stone rings, while halo designs make centre stones appear larger than their carat weight. The latter typically involves a larger stone encircled by a ‘halo’ of accent stones. Other settings include pavé, cathedral, bezel and basket.

Shopping Tips

Buying a diamond ring is a big decision and often comes accompanied by a hefty price tag. That’s why it’s important to purchase your ring from a certified seller that offers warranties with its products. There are plenty of outlets to find your diamond ring, including online retailers, reputable jewellers and brick-and-mortar stores.
