On Saturday 23rd December, we headed into Birmingham City Centre to see Emily Brown and The Thing at The Hippodrome. I love going to the theatre and think its such as lovely day out, as it is fun for all of the family no matter what age. Emily Brown and The Thing is one of many books that is written by Cressida Cowel and Neal Layton. Prior to the show, I actually brought the book so as my children could familiarise themselves with the story. So all five of us were really excited to see this story come to life on stage!
Prior to the show we spent some time enjoying a cuppa and the kids could enjoy colouring. We then entered the Patrick Studio, which is a small and intimate theatre just off the main central reception area. This was a perfect size for the production, as Emily Brown and The Thing has just three members of cast that held the show together. Now lets get on to the story…
Cuppa, Cake and our Emily and The Thing Tickets
Baby K super excited…for cake!
Emily Brown and The Thing tells the story of a little girl and her rabbit bear, Stanley. They cannot get to sleep due to a series of noises that have been created by The Thing. The Thing asks Emily and Stanley for help, whether it be he is hungry and needs some milk or he has lost his favourite blanket. Using our imaginations, the story follows Emily and Stanley on their adventures through the Dark and Scary Wood, Wild and Whirling Wastes and the Winey Witches Cavern. Emily shows how it really is ok to tackle your fears and to not be afraid. It really is so imaginative and using both puppets and themselves, you can really immerse yourself in their adventure. All five of us including Baby K who is only 21 months were fully enthralled and enjoyed all of the 60 minutes worth of show.
Emily and The Thing
The cast were incredible and to hold down a show for 60 minutes with only the three of them must have been a task. But it worked and it felt really personal. With a combination of incredible acting and singing, it really was a fantastic show and one to definitely add to your theatre bucket list. We were all very impressed and Sophie Alice was a pleasure to watch as Emily. Sam Buitetant was also fantastic as his various roles of the Troll, Polar Bear and the Witch but especially his role as The Thing – I fell in love with the character! And finally Jordan Turner was perfectly casted to Stanley The Rabbit.
