Healthy Slow Cooked Chilli Recipe for the family

Using a slow cooker is a life saver as a family of 5.  Its super easy, cooks tasty meals and can be healthy for all the family.  Cooking chilli is a favourite of ours and we all love it, and that’s hard to conquer with fussy kids.  Cooking it is not only quick and easy, but it is extra tasty when slow cooked and provides so much flavour, especially when using a recipe mix for ease.

If you have a busy day ahead, you can simply prepare this the night before, whack it all in the slow cooker, and turn on in the morning ready for your arrival home later on in the day.

So, how do you make a healthy family friendly chilli con carne in the slow cooker?

Ingrediants

-1 onion

-2/3 cloves of garlic

-1 tin of plum tomatoes

-1 red pepper

-6 chopped cherry tomatoes

-2 tablespoons of tomato paste

-1 chilli con carne schwartz sachet

-250 grams of turkey mince

-1 tin of kidney beans

– sweetcorn if desired

Ingredients to make a healthy family friendly recipe

Method

1.Cut your onion into small chunks and gently fry in some Frylight or Olive Oil spray.  I’d suggest 5 sprays, then top up your frying pan with some water so your onions don’t dry quickly and burn.  This is also a great way of keeping your slow cooked chilli even healthier by not adding much oil.  Add your chopped garlic  – if your a fan of garlic, add as much as you like!

2.Once your onions are gently simmering (after about 5-8 minutes) add them into the slow cooker along with the tin of plum tomatoes, tomato puree, chopped cherry tomatoes, schwartz chilli mix and finally your turkey mince.  Turkey is low in fat and is another way in which this chilli recipe is healthy and lower in fat, making it super healthy!

3.Let the chilli simmer on a high heat for about 3 hours, then turn low for a further 3 hours.

4.After a total of 6 hours cooking, add your kidney beans and cook for a further 30 minutes. Add sweetcorn if desired. If the sauce is a little watery, add some gravy granules to thicken.

5.You can eat with boiled long grain rice, or for an even tastier side, why not try homemade tortillas?  Simply use a pizza cutter and cut your tortilla wraps into triangles.  Then bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes with a drizzle of oil, salt and pepper to season.  Add a dollop of sour creme for extra flavour!

Why use Schwartz?

Well, first and foremost, it’s super easy and simple.  Containing a collection of herbs and spices, using a sachet of schwartz within your meal is a great addition to the flavours your already combining and saves rummaging in your cupboards for ALL the spices!  You can use with both meat and veggie chilli’s and are a cheap way to bring some spice however strong into your dish!

Schwartz also offer the chilli con carne mix in two heats which is great if you wish for your dish to be extra spicy – perhaps if your not cooking for the kids!  Matt loves some extra spice, so if you wish, dish up the kids meals first, then add any extra spice to the rest of the mix.

This slow cooked chilli fed all five of us with some to spare, so Mr B had it two nights in the row!  You can pick this mix up most supermarkets, including Tesco.  For more products by Schwart, check out their website!
