History influences much of what we do and why the world is the way that it is. It can however be difficult to teach young children as you’re teaching them about a world that no longer exists. To make it understandable for children and grow their learning of the world around them, a nursery in Clapham shared a few of their recommendations below on how to introduce the topics.
The world has come a long way and there are lots of examples that you can highlight this through, like the way that we tell time for example. Before the invention of digital clocks, they were all analogue like many still are. If you go even further back through history, sundials were used. Other examples include the way that we take photos, and the games children play.
You can also explore history through your very own family tree. With time, families grow and there are several generations to follow from what started with a few people. Start off with a brief picture of mum, dad, siblings, and their grandparents on each side. To help them with their understanding, use photographs of each family member. This will also help them to learn how you’re all related to one another.
Museums are filled with ancient artefacts and have interesting stories to tell. Your little one will be able to learn all about what you’ve been teaching them first hand and will be amazed at how different things once were.
Children love story time and history-themed story books are a good way for them to absorb fun facts and learn history in small, understandable doses. The pictures in their storybooks will also paint them a picture and make it easy for them to follow along.
