I had the pleasure of chatting to the wonderful Gabby who is the founder of Avocado Kids at the end of 2020. I was thrilled to work with her and offer my readers a review of this lovely educational and fun kids subscription box with is FULL of cooking activities! We look cooking in our home (I may not be the best cook!) but when I cook with the kids, it’s all about having fun – or at least trying to. It can be difficult to allow them to help sometimes – there may be too much knife work involved or the tasks are simply too difficult for them to join in. So having a box ready made full of recipes that the kids can join in with and a box full of goodies was the perfect reason to all get in the kitchen and help!
Avocado Kids launched in September 2020 by a wonderful lady called Gabby. Gabby has a whole host of life experience when it comes to cooking and decided to put all her ideas and learning into a kids cooking subscription kit. You can really tell that her boxes are not only fun but are full of love too. From the different activities, facts and fun recipes, you can tell this box has been made with all the family in mind to simply spend time together and get working as a team.
Avocado kids is a monthly subscription box which you can sign up to for different periods. The box is tied at children aged 4-12 years old. Want to send a gift? No problem – you can sign up to just a one off box, or if you prefer, sign up for 6 or even 12 months. Each month focuses on a different country where you will find your box full of recipes and activities about that place in the world. We chose USA as less face it, we miss our Disney holidays!
As I have said, the box is brimming with lovely ideas to get all the family involved with the cooking experience. Inside you with find:
– Documents for you ‘trip’ to your country including a boarding pass, QR code to take you to a spotify play list, fun facts,
– Welcome leaflet detailing what is inside the box
– 4 receipe cards
– Shopping list
– Activity relating to the country theme, in this case it was how to make a wreath.
– Learn a new skill challenge or life skill
– Dinner talk time coasters
– Learn how to grow…!
– Free gift!
As soon as we opened the box, we were in for a delight! We chose USA and I couldn’t wait to see what we had in store. Gabby had kindly popped in a beautiful apron for the kids which was fantastic quality. It’s also good to know that you get one of these aprons FREE if you sign up to 6 or 12 months subscription. I was straight away blown away by the amount of contents inside and immediately my younger two children saw the mini grater and couldn’t wait to give it a try. We looked thought the contents all together and were super excited to have a shopping list immediately to hand. We also loved having the QR code to take us straight to the USA Spotify playlist playing some awesome music inspired by the country! We all agreed that we wanted to cook the American Burgers – they looked and sounded delicious!
A few days later after shopping for the ingredients we all got into the kitchen. To have all three of the kids super keen to get involved was lovely and as we played the music, I felt super happy. Don’t get me wrong, the kids were SO excited and we had a few bickers and my kitchen looked pretty busy – BUT, we were all enjoying ourselves and working together to make our meal. It’s pretty good going if you ask me!
We followed the recipe, adapting it slightly choosing turkey mince to make the burger a little more healthy and the kids prefer the lighter meat. Mr K learnt a new skill in using a grater, Missy loved trying lettuce for the first time and Mr B had a go at flipping a burger!
Whilst we ate our burgers we were inspired to talk about kindness and used the dinner talk time coaster to have a little chat.
Verdict on the burgers? Mr B said 9/10 – I can’t say fairer than that!
What a lovely cookery subscription box for kids. I would totally recommend for families to give this a try, especially if you need and want some encouragement to all get into the kitchen, with a few aids to support this. I cannot wait to try the cauliflower mac and cheese recipe next!
