There are some meals you remember because the food was incredible, and there are others you remember because of the people you were with, and in reality, the best meals out usually involve a bit of both because although good food is obviously very important, most people aren’t arranging dinner with friends just because they’re hungry.
The thing is that life gets busy, and that’s why a meal out can be such a nice way to spend time together because it gives everyone a reason to stop rushing around for a couple of hours and actually enjoy each other’s company. With that in mind, keep reading to find out more about how to make the most of a meal out with friends.

One of the easiest ways to start things off on the right foot is by picking a place that works for everyone. Of course, that doesn’t mean spending weeks debating menus in a group chat (although you probably will at some point), but it’s worth thinking about what the people you’re meeting might enjoy. After all, no one wants to spend the evening wishing they’d suggested somewhere else.
Sometimes that means choosing somewhere familiar, and other times it means trying somewhere new. Either way, the goal is really the same – finding a place where everyone can relax and enjoy themselves.
It’s really easy to put pressure on social plans, even though that’s the last thing you’ll actually want to do. But the fact is that people worry about choosing the right venue, booking the right table, picking the right time, and making sure everything goes exactly according to plan. However, most friends aren’t judging the event as if it’s being professionally organised, they’re just there to spend time together.
So if someone’s running late, the service is a little slower than expected, or things don’t go exactly how you imagined, it usually doesn’t actually matter.
This probably sounds obvious, but it’s worth mentioning because when you think about it, there’s something slightly strange about organising a meal with friends only to spend half the evening looking at a screen.
Of course, everyone checks their phone occasionally, and that’s completely normal, but some of the best conversations happen when people aren’t distracted by notifications, messages, and everything else competing for their attention.
Not every catch-up has to happen in the evening, and sometimes meeting earlier in the day can actually make things easier because people often have fewer commitments, and there’s something quite relaxed about sitting down together without feeling rushed.
In other words, choosing a nice restaurant for brunch can be the ideal solution because it offers the chance to catch up properly while still leaving the rest of the day free for whatever comes next.
When you think back to meals you’ve really enjoyed, there’s a good chance you don’t remember every detail of what you ordered… but you’ll definitely remember a funny story someone told, a bit of gossip you weren’t expecting, or just how nice it felt to spend time together, and that’s really what makes a meal out with friends worthwhile.
