This week we attended the Press night of Nativity! at Birmingham Rep. The Nativity! films have been a huge hit in our house for the past few years, with my own children introducing me to the funny festive films that fill us with joy! With us beginning the festivities already, I had high hopes for this musical to make us all feel in the mood for Christmas, and it didn’t disappoint.
From the moment the curtains came up, we were greeted with a bright and vibrant stage production with likable characters from the get-go. The story follows the first film in the movie franchise, where Mr Madden, a primary school teacher, falls out of love with Christmas due to a bad break up, but with the help from Mr Poppy his classroom assistant, he manages to claw back his festive enjoyment by hosting the school Nativity.
Between Mr Maddens school and the opposition school (OakMoor Primary) the race is on to win a 5-star review for their nativity shows, but there are a few hiccups on the way!
From the beginning, I felt overwhelmed with joy and love for this musical. It made me literally beam from ear to ear from start to finish, with belly laughs thrown in for good measure. Both my younger two children who attended (8 and 5) were captivated by the fabulous children that took over the stage with their beautiful signing and star-studded performances.
Mr Poppy made the show with us, beginning as the narrator of the musical then captivating the audience with his hilarious and likable performance throughout.
This is such a wonderful performance for family and friends to attend and will guarantee you singing along to some of the films top hits; Sparkle and Shine, Nazareth, One Night One Moment, She’s the Brightest Star.
We all skipped away from the theatre singing along to the glittering lights of Birmingham overhead. If you are looking for a festive family day out, I 100% recommend this wonderful festive musical, that will be perfect for all the family.
