The Green House pub in Sutton Coldfield – A girl’s night out

My Mama and sisters are my best friends.  But with the amount of children between us sisters to fill a football team, we make sure we take the time to have some ‘grown up time’ together!  We love to dine out as a family, with or without the kiddies (obviously without is far easier of course!)  We love all the aspects that dining out has to bring – the atmosphere, ambience, drinks and of course the food and company.

The Green House pub in Sutton Coldfield has recently had a huge refurbishment and I was invited along to check out the new interiors of this trendy yet cosy restaurant.  So making sure the kids were looked after at home, myself, my Mama and two sisters headed off to the restaurant to see what it was all about. Recently, I reviewed the country pub The Bull’s Head in Meriden so I had high expectations!

The country pub and restaurant is beautifully decorated with a real mix of modern meets tradition.  With a real log fire burning in the bar area, it gives the warmth and cosiness we all desire at this time of year.  The bar offers an array of drinks to tickle your fancy but we were recommended to create our own mix of gin and tonics, so we did just that, picking our own garnishes to compliment this all time classic drink!

We enjoyed a beautiful selection of canapés prior to our meal which we enjoyed in the bar right by the fire.  Our selection included miniature versions of some of the starters as well as a few extras.  We enjoyed lobster and king prawn pot, duck liver and port parfait, lamb kofta, falafel, mini cod fishcakes with pea puree, smoked salmon – all simply delicious!  It was great to try these miniture versions of the starters on offer – I particularly enjoyed the cod fishcakes and the parfait.

We made out way over to the restaurant area where we had a choice of where to sit.  The restaurant is spacious but not too big, with a warming feel to the place, with hints of contemporary and stylish decor.  I especially loved the tables that were surrounded by the lit up mirrors which looked very on trend.

Starters

I went for the scallops of the day which were with a carrot puree and included bacon and red onion rosti.  The scallops were cooked beautifully and tasted delicious with the puree.  I actually felt the rosti didn’t need to be included in this dish – it was a starter in it’s own right.  Whilst still tasting delicious, I felt the two elements of this dish could be kept separate to ensure you got the full flavours.  Mum also had the same and also agreed.  My sister J had the duck liver parfait which she described as light and delicious and my other sister C had the lobster and king prawn pot which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Mains

For mains, both C and I went for the beef fillet salad which included a light soy, lime and lemongrass dressing.  The beef was so flavoursome and we both felt the dish was a hit.  J went for the pan-fried Seabass with parmentier potatoes, panchetta, olives, spinach and white wine veloute.  Again, she described this dish as being very tasty with a beautiful white wine veloute that really complimented the fish.  My Mum had the roasted pork belly with scallops, potato dauphinoise, butternut squash purée, green beans, toasted almonds, crackling and red wine jus.  Although the menu stated crackling, this didn’t seem to be the case. However she enjoyed the dish.  There really wasn’t much left on our plates and we felt very positive about our dishes.

Desserts

Finally, we had desserts and there was plenty to choose from.  I opted for the melting chocolate and peanut bomb.  This was filled with sticky toffee pudding and peanut butter cream and served with bourbon vanilla ice cream & hot salted caramel sauce.  Oh my gosh wasn’t this a treat!  The waitress poured the warm caramel sauce over the bomb and it melted into a gooey delicious mess – it was heavenly!  J and Mum opted for the creme brûlée which they enjoyed if a little too deep.  Finally, C had the mango, berry and cocunut meriange which was light and fluffy and was the perfect way to end the meal.

Overall, we had such an enjoyable experience at The Green House Pub in Sutton Coldfield.  The refurbished look is stylish, contemporary yet still holds on to that county pub feel.  A special thank you to our server of the evening Alice, who really did look after us!  This pub is a great addition to Sutton and I am sure will be jam packed throughout the year.
