The Gruffalo Live on Stage Review The Hippodrome

‘A mouse took a stroll through the deep, dark wood.  A fox saw the saw the mouse and the mouse looked good…’  If your a parent or grandparent to a child of any age, then you’ll know the story of The Gruffalo.  Not only have us parents read the lines over and over from the famous and award winning book written by Julia Donaldson.  But The Gruffalo is now shown on the TV (especially over Christmas!)

The Graffalo Live on Stage arrived in Birmingham at The Hippodrome on Tuesday 25th June 2019. and is offering four shows across two days until Wednesday 26th June 2019.  Myself, Matt and Baby K were kindly invited along to the opening show.  The show will also be visiting various theatres across the UK, so if you have a child that is an avid Gruffalo fan, then go and check out your local theatre!

The Gruffalo Live on Stage lasts approximately 1 hour with no interval.  The show is aimed at children aged 3 years and above. With Baby K only being 2 years old, I wasn’t sure as to whether he would sit still for the whole performance.  He is a tad under the recommended age, however he has watched many theatre shows before, such as Rudolf and The Thing, which he really enjoyed.  He also loves the cinema too!

The performance was shown in the Main House, which I just love as it is so classical and beautiful to look at.  If your aware of the story, then you’ll know how it goes!  We followed a Mouse who takes a journey through a forest.  Along the way, the Mouse meets a fox, an owl and even a snake!

The story progresses and we eventually get to meet The Gruffalo himself, much to all the kids delight! All the children in the audience were wooping with delight, and the audience participation paid off well!

You know you’ve enjoyed a show, when you make your way home and start humming and singing the songs from the performance.  All the songs were truly catching, and it was a pleasure to watch from an adult perspective.  Whilst I do think Baby K was a tad too young, he did enjoy it.  However, I would definitely agree in that it is aimed at children aged 3 and above.  Missy who is 5 would have loved it!

The Gruffalo stage show is showing at The Hippodrome for 1 more day on Wednesday 26th June 2019.  If you don’t live local, do check out your own local theatre to see if The Gruffalo Live on Stage will be visiting you soon!
