The Importance of English Literature in Schools

English literature is one of the most important subjects taught at school for the reason that it teaches children life lessons as well as linguistic skills. It’s also an opportunity for them to develop a love for reading and find educational hobbies that they enjoy. We teamed up with an independent school in Surrey to learn about these benefits.

Why it is important to teach English Literature in schools

History

History is not only insightful. It teaches us valuable lessons that we can take from the past and helps us in understanding our roots. As children learn about how language has evolved over time, they will visit texts from the past such as the plays written by William Shakespeare. They will catch a glimpse into what life was like through the plots and the kinds of beliefs shared amongst those of the times.

Life Lessons

English teaches children to think critically and draw deeper meanings from what they read. They are also taught how to pull out evidence and build conclusions using the technique PEE. It naturally lends itself to essay writing which they will need to do throughout their other subjects at school.

Reading and Writing

As well as this there’s the skill to be able to read and write. While basic skills that we overlook, they are essential to everyday life. They are needed to do everything from read street signs and get around to writing letters and dealing with matters formally.

Vocabulary

Children are given set spellings to learn each week. These are words that they are expected to learn the meaning and spelling of which helps them in growing their vocabulary. As it grows, they will become better at communicating themselves.

These are just a few of the reasons as to why English Literature is so important. You can help your child to make progress in English by doing a number of activities like by reading to them and helping them with their homework.
