Being total book worms in our house, I never like to turn down a book review. So it was a pleasure to receive The Rainbow Gnome by Luis Weston to review a few weeks ago. We all know reading is so important for a child’s development. It assists with your child’s social and emotional skills as well as helping them grow into a confident and happy learner. It’s also a lovely way to spend some time together at the end of the day. Or at any point of the day in fact! I got all three involved with this one!
The Rainbow Gnome is a magical story aimed for preschoolers and beyond. It focuses on a little boy called Joe whose mission is to find out where rainbows come from. Joe embarks on a journey and meets some colourful characters along the way, who help him with his quest to find out where a rainbow begins.
The story is one that rhymes as well as having repetitive phrases throughout the book. This is a great way to captivate a child and allows them to join in. My little girl W is fascinated by rhymes at the moment as she is learning about phonics so this went down well with her! It’s a great way to encourage children to read along, join in and makes story time that bit more interactive.
The book is beautifully illustrated and is very colourful, which is great for little imaginations! We’ve read this book quite a few times now, and each time W finds something new on one of the pages. The drawings feel so real and are extremely detailed! Even as an adult, I really stare at the pictures each time we read the book. I am fascinated by the detail!
We’ve really enjoyed reading The Rainbow Gnome and it’s a book that is on the top of the reading pile so to speak! We’ve read it quite a few times since we received it! It’s fun and magical story line makes it enticing for any reader and the fact it’s illustrations are so colourful, also makes it interesting to look at. It terms of its target audience, I feel it’s a perfect book for any preschooler who has a love for rainbows, rhymes and has a vivid imagination – that’s most 4 year olds then I’d say!
Story time for us is a way of winding down. B really likes to read to his younger siblings before bedtime – on his own terms mind! It’s lovely to see them spend that quality time together and support each other in their own independent learning.
