Top 5 home extension ideas

Sometimes moving house is a ball ache, and having a home extension can be a lot easier – less money, less stress and still the comfort of staying in your own home.  With the possibility of moving house on the horizon, a recent conversation occurred between my husband and I about extending our own property, rather than moving.  This lead me to draw up some ideas as to how it would be possible, and I wanted to share some of my top 5 home extension ideas with you.

1.Conservatory

Growing up, my parents always had a conservatory.  It was a great way to make extra space inside the home, without having a full brickwork extension.  Nowadays, you can have conservatories with heated floors, integrated roofs and large floor to ceiling windows.   Of course, the price of a conservatory is dependent on size and style and what you actually want to use a conservatory for.  For example, an extension of your lounge, kitchen or even a separate room altogether.

2. Side Lean to

This is a great way to put the space to the side of a property to good use.  Many homes have some space to the side of the home, to gain access to the back garden.  Consider as to whether you require this outdoor space, and if not, how about building a lean to.  This is a great way to have a narrow utility off the kitchen or a downstairs toilet.  Or if you already have a lean to, does it need extra work doing to it to include as living space.  Does it need replacement windows, a new door or flooring?  This space could then be opened up to living and useable space.

3. Back Lean to

This, is a great way to extend a kitchen toward the back of your home.  However, this will come at a cost.  But, they do look fantastic and with the addition of biofolding doors and skylights, it can really bring some extra light into your home.  More often than not, a kitchen diner extension is great for this, or to have an open plan family room.  Not only can it look impressive, but it will also add a nice value to your property.

4. Garage Conversion

If you haven’t already, having a garage conversion it a great way to make use of a space that isn’t needed, or used.  We had our garage coverted in 2015, and it was the best thing we ever did.  We opened up our lounge into the garage space to make a lounge through diner.  We didn’t need our garage and instead, build a sturdy shed in our garden for any tool or garden equipment storage.  We now have a bright, airy and spacious lounge diner which feels more open plan than having our lounge as a singular room.

5. Loft extension

Need more bedrooms?  This is another way of making extra use of unused or unwanted space.  Unfortunately for us, with no garage means that our loft is crammed full.  However, it really is worth looking at what options you have when it comes to extending your property with a loft conversion.  Some, you’ll be able to have a partial loft conversion, still keeping some of your storage space.  Or you can completely transform your loft with a large double bedroom complete with a en-suite.  Consider the shape and space of your landing and the best way to get up into the loft. Does your landing have space for a staircase, steep ladders or a spiral staircase?  There is various options, and it’s worth looking into, to give yourself an addition of another bedroom.
