We’re going on a Bear Hunt LIVE on Stage *Review*

‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt!  We’re going to catch a big one!  We’re not scared!’  If you recognise those words, then you’ll know what classic story written by Micheal Rosen, I am referring to!

Last week, we had the pleasure of visiting Birmingham’s Town Hall to watch the popular stage show adaption of  the much loved children’s book,  We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.  This book is extremely popular for children between the ages of 2-6, and if you haven’t read this book to your child yet, I am sure you will be doing so in the future.  Now, this fantastic and adventurous story is now on tour and is at Birmingham’s Town Hall until Sunday 12th January 2020.

We love the Town Hall.  Located in the centre of Birmingham, this is a fantastic historical venue to watch a show.  Only a stone throw away from the hustle and bustle of Birminghams’ Bull Ring and surrounded by an array of restaurants (you must try Byron Burger!), visiting here to watch a family show is a perfect family day out in Birmingham.  We’ve been here several times, last year watching the famous stage show The Tiger Who came to Tea, which was brilliant.  So I had high hopes for this stage show adaption of We’re going on a Bear Hunt Live!

The show is of course, based on the classic children’s book, following the adventures of Dad and his three children.  We followed along on their travels of going on a bear hunt, taking ourselves on a journey across the river, through the snow and into the forest.  There was a small cast of four, who were able to capture the audiences imagination incredibly well.  Due to the minimalist set, I did wonder if the stage show would hold the kids attention. However, with the incorporation of audience participation and humour, they managed to do this very well.

The kids loved the journey across the river, and you may even get a surprise of getting wet!  And we were all laughing when they crossed the muddy field, complete with brown paint and hand printed bums!  We also loved the family dog who also doubled up as the musician, playing most of the music live on stage.

As a family with three children aged 9, 5 and 2, I felt that this show is perfectly aimed for children between the ages of 2-6.  My eldest 9 watched the show in enjoyment, but he was a little old for the production and I did receive a few eye rolls!  The chanting singing and repetition of catchy tunes is really suitable for the younger child, which allowed many a parent to join in as well.

The 55 minute show was really enjoyable and we were all chanting and singing the catchy songs as we left.  The actors were brilliant and the surprise of the bear at the end of the show really pleased the kids in the audience.  I just wished we saw a little bit more of the fluffy huggable bear.

We’re going on a Bear Hunt is on at Birmingham’s Town Hall until Sunday 12th January 2020.  Tickets are priced between £13-£16 and you can check out ‘What’s On’ here.

Thanks for reading xxx
