What You Can Do When Your Parents Need Extra Support

There’s something uniquely tragic about realizing that your parents aren’t able to do as much as they used to. When you’re younger, they seem like they can do anything. But the positions switch and, while your parents once looked after you, you may have to provide more support as they get older. 

Every situation is different, which means that we all need to think about the best ways to take care of our older family members. Here are a few things to consider when working out your parents’ care.

Talk to Them

This is not the time to start making decisions about your parents without actually having a conversation with them. If you’re concerned about their wellbeing and their future, bring up your concerns. They may need to go to the doctor if you’ve noticed signs that their health is declining. 

If your parents have different physical needs, but their mental and cognitive state is fine, you can ask them what they would prefer when it comes to their care. You should also coordinate with their doctors to learn their recommendations. Whether that’s supported care while living independently or a retirement village for sale.

You might also consider a living will, or at least a conversation with your parents if they are likely to decline further. This allows them to tell you what they want to happen when they aren’t able to look after themselves anymore.

Maintaining Independence

Depending on your parents’ circumstances, you might be able to help them maintain their independence and dignity for as long as possible. This does often mean making some compromises. 

A home care agency, for example, allows your parents to stay in their home for as long as possible, while still providing additional care. This means that people can stay in a familiar place, where their friends and family can visit when they like. 

The home care services might range from housekeeping services to overnight care and personal care. You can cater to your parents’ needs.

Respite Care

Another benefit of getting additional help to look after your parents is that it provides you some respite. You might decide to take on the lion’s share of responsibility when it comes to looking after your aging family, and that’s your decision. 

However, if you try to do everything alone, especially if you’re also looking after your children and other responsibilities, you will get burned out. Caregiver burnout is very common and it can be very damaging to your health and wellbeing, meaning that you will struggle to take care of anyone else.

So, accept help when it’s offered and look for it when you can. This might be a compromise that you have to make, especially if your parents would prefer you to take on all of their care. While you don’t want them to see themselves as a burden, it’s important to find a balance between your needs and their care. 

This way, you can give them the care they need for as long as possible.
