If you’re considering a new school for your child, we highly recommend that you arrange a visit. It allows you to understand more about schools and can help you in narrowing down your choices. Here are some more reasons as to why you should attend school open days.
This post is in collaboration with a senior school in Devon.
Open days aren’t exclusively available to parents, children can tag along to and make their own mind up. It is where they will be spending their time after all so it’s only fair to let them have their say. They will be able to familiarise themselves with the school environment and the teachers there so when it becomes time, the move will feel a little less scary. It’s also the perfect opportunity to air any concerns that they may have and ask questions.
There’s only so much that you can take away from a school website and their reports. It doesn’t tell you about the culture that they have and how committed they are to their pupils. By visiting schools in person, you can gauge the level of care and support that your child will receive and gain insight into things that you wouldn’t otherwise by posing questions to the teachers themselves. For example, you can have discussions regarding your child’s specific learning needs and learn about what’s in place to support them.
As you liaise with teaching staff, you will be able to build relationships with them before your child even starts school.
The thought of sending your child to a new school can be scary, especially if it’s their first experience of being away from home. Visiting the place can offer you some reassurance knowing that they are in safe and capable hands.
Aside from the quality of education and the school itself, there’s the commute and many other factors that you will need to consider. The best way to work out how suitable a school is in this regard is to make a trip down there yourself. You will be able to see what traffic and local transport links are like and whether parking is convenient.
