Why role models are important for children

Role models help to shape our children’s futures, providing them with the guidance, inspiration and examples they need to develop into well-rounded adults. Their presence and influence can have lasting effects on a young person’s personal development and their outlook on life.

And these individuals can come from almost anywhere. They might be family members, teachers, fictional characters, celebrities, or star players on their favourite sports teams. Who they are is largely immaterial; what really matters is the impact they make. Here, we’ll discuss some of the effects they can have on future generations.

Shaping values and ethics

Children learn by observing the behaviours of the adults around them, and these observations can shape their understanding of right and wrong. Role models exemplify desirable traits such as kindness, honesty and integrity, providing a living example for children to emulate. Their daily interactions and decisions demonstrate how to act in various situations and help younger people learn appropriate responses to the challenges they encounter.

Inspiration and aspiration

Seeing someone they admire achieve success can motivate children to strive for similar achievements. For instance, exposure to role models from diverse careers can broaden horizons and increase motivation. This was evidenced in a recent study where primary-aged kids who interacted with a variety of career role models felt inspired and more optimistic about their future prospects.

Development of social skills

These skills include communication, empathy and the ability to resolve conflicts effectively. By observing how their role models interact with others, children learn how to navigate social situations and relationships successfully. This learning is often implicit, with children picking up on nuances of communication and behaviour.

Coping with challenges

By observing how role models handle setbacks and adversity, children learn resilience and problem-solving skills. This aspect is particularly crucial for young people growing up in difficult circumstances, as role models can demonstrate alternative pathways to success and show that positive outcomes are possible despite hardship.

Positive behavioural patterns

Consistent exposure to positive behavioural patterns from role models reinforces good habits in children. Whether it’s seeing someone maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress effectively or balancing work and personal life, children learn to mimic these behaviours. Over time, these habits can significantly impact a young person’s health, academic performance and overall wellbeing.

Role models are more than just people that children look up to; they are integral in shaping the future generation. Parents, educators, community leaders and even the rich and famous all have a part to play in ensuring that children have access to a diverse range of positive exemplars throughout their formative years.
