I’ve done a few escape rooms in my time, including an amazing family friendly escape room for Christmas celebrations at Resorts World (which the kids and I loved!) But I’d never considered an escape room at home. Truthfully, I didn’t know they existed until I heard about Epic Escapes.
Epic Escapes is where you get to experience a real life escape room but in the comfort of your own home (and not a zoom call in sight!) Epic Escapes asked us to review their fabulous experience and share out story with you on our blog. I couldn’t wait to see what this amazing escape room concept was all about and put it to the test!
So, what is actually inside the Epic Escape Room Box? Let’s find out!
Inside you’ll find 3 escape rooms including EASY, MEDIUM and HARD. Each escape room can be completed by up to 6 players. Each escape room has its own A4 envelope full of all the materials you need to lay out your room, including step by step instructions, padlocks, boxes, props and hints to complete your escape room at home. There is also a generic parcel that contains items that will be required to use across each room.
I was like a small child opening the Epic Escape Rooms box for the first time and immediately chose the EASY room to begin with. As we were playing as a family with my eldest son (who is 10) we felt this option was the best. The easy room is a Crime related room and the following two, which are much harder are based on Hijack and Piracy.
Now, I imagine you’ll thinking; how do you set up the room? Well, this means that one of the players has to be the host. This person will then read the step by step instructions on how to set up the room, where to put items and how to use the padlocks and props. I chose to do this for the first room and let my son and husband play (however I found myself still being able to play as I soon forgot the codes) and being the host for the crime room didn’t reveal some of the answers.
You’re house-sitting for a friend who has gone away to Italy. All was going well, until some people started angrily banging on the door in the middle of the night. It turns out your friend is part of some kind of crime syndicate and owes these people money.
Fortunately, you’ve found your way into your friend’s panic room. However, you’ve now locked yourself in and cannot get out or make contact with the police. The gangsters have left, but you only have one hour of oxygen left in the secured panic room. You need to figure out how to escape the room and get help!
You must work out what’s going on and why your friend has a panic room in order to figure out how to escape the room to save yourselves…”
From the moment I opened the envelope I was completely impressed. From the easy step by step instructions, to the props and clues provided, this felt like an actual escape room! The props were of excellent quality and it was really easy to work the safe and padlocks with extra instructions online if required. They even offered extra padlocks just in case you got one locked!
I took about 10 minutes to set up the room which was incredibly fun to do. I loved seeing my family come into the room and immediately started to search and look around for clues. My 10 year old was fully engaged and loved being able to open up the padlocks and attempt to crack the codes. Whilst this game is aimed at adults, he was fully engaged and whilst he couldn’t participate fully he managed to crack the last clue (which was the hardest!)
As with a real escape room, you can normally reach out for help via a walkie talkie to the game room leaders. Obviously this isn’t something you can do at home! So Epic Escapes offer hint cards to help you along the way. This is super helpful as we had to use them a few times. You also get 1 hour to ‘escape the room’ and we managed to escape in 50 minutes so felt we experienced our first room to its full potential!
There is a huge padlock provided which is the padlock to use to ‘lock yourself in the room’. In reality, the room isn’t locked and it is just a prop.
Overall, I loved this experience and is a great alternative to a night out or even just a typical night in! I can’t wait to experience the other two rooms with extended family and make a real fun night, complete with food and drinks.
